What Is Cabenuva Used For?

Cabenuva (cabotegravir and rilpivirine) is a complete, long-acting injectable HIV-1 treatment regimen. It is indicated for:

  • Treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and adolescents 12 years and older weighing at least 35 kg, to replace a current antiretroviral regimen in patients who are virologically suppressed with no history of treatment failure and no known resistance to cabotegravir or rilpivirine

Cabenuva is a prescription medicine and must be administered by a healthcare provider. It is a complete regimen — it should not be combined with other HIV antiretroviral medicines.

Recommended Dosage

  • An optional oral lead-in with cabotegravir and rilpivirine tablets may be used for about 1 month before starting injections
  • Monthly dosing: initiation injection of 600 mg cabotegravir/900 mg rilpivirine, then 400 mg/600 mg every month
  • Every-2-month dosing: initiation injections of 600 mg/900 mg for 2 consecutive months, then 600 mg/900 mg every 2 months
  • Administered as gluteal intramuscular injections only

This information is not a treatment plan. For personalized medical advice, consult your doctor and refer to the full prescribing information.

Cabenuva Warnings and Precautions

  • Hypersensitivity reactions: Serious reactions including Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS)/toxic epidermal necrolysis (with cabotegravir) and DRESS (with rilpivirine) have been reported.
  • Depressive disorders: Depression and mood changes have been reported; patients should be evaluated promptly if symptoms occur.
  • Hepatotoxicity: Liver function should be monitored, particularly in patients with underlying liver disease.
  • Prolonged drug exposure after discontinuation: Cabotegravir and rilpivirine remain detectable in the body for up to 12 months or longer after the last injection, which is relevant for resistance monitoring and pregnancy.
  • Not to be combined with other antiretrovirals: Cabenuva is a complete regimen and should not be given alongside other HIV treatment medicines.

Documentation & Availability

What documents are required to import Cabenuva to India?

Cabenuva (cabotegravir and rilpivirine) injection may be imported in the patient's name only, by patients or government hospitals, in line with India's import regulations for unapproved medicines. The following documentation is required:

  • A valid prescription from a qualified HIV/infectious disease specialist
  • The patient's diagnostic reports confirming virologic suppression on a stable antiretroviral regimen
  • Patient ID proof (issued by the Government of India)

How is the order confirmed?

The order is confirmed only after receipt and verification of a valid prescription from the doctor and, if applicable, an import permit.

Is Cabenuva available in India?

Cabenuva (cabotegravir and rilpivirine injection) is a prescription medicine that legally requires a doctor's prescription to be dispensed. As of current publicly available information, Cabenuva is not commercially marketed in India.

However, patients in India can legally access Cabenuva through the Named Patient Program (NPP) — an import provision that allows patients to receive medicines approved in other countries but not yet marketed in India, under a doctor's prescription and proper regulatory documentation.

Cabenuva received US FDA approval in 2021 for HIV-1 treatment as a complete long-acting injectable regimen, ensuring full transparency throughout the process.
