Pentacarinat (pentamidine isetionate) is an antiprotozoal and antifungal medicine marketed by Sanofi in the UK and EU under the Summary of Product Characteristics (SmPC) framework. Pentacarinat is used for the treatment and prevention of Pneumocystis carinii (jirovecii) pneumonia (PCP), particularly in HIV-infected patients with a prior PCP episode, as well as for the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis and early-stage (haemolymphatic) African trypanosomiasis caused by Trypanosoma gambiense.
Pentamidine interferes with the metabolism and reproduction of the protozoa and fungal organisms responsible for these infections, helping to clear or suppress the infection depending on the indication.
Pentacarinat is used both as active treatment for confirmed PCP, leishmaniasis, or early-stage trypanosomiasis, and as prophylaxis against PCP in HIV-infected patients at risk of recurrence.
For PCP prophylaxis, Pentacarinat is commonly given via nebulised inhalation at 300 mg every 4 weeks, or 150 mg every 2 weeks. Treatment dosing for active PCP, leishmaniasis, or trypanosomiasis is weight-based and administered intramuscularly or intravenously, as determined by the treating physician based on indication and patient factors.
Pentacarinat does not use the FDA-style formal boxed warning format, as it is marketed under the UK/EU regulatory framework. However, patients and prescribers should be aware of the following important safety information from the UK Summary of Product Characteristics.
Nephrotoxicity is the most commonly reported adverse effect of pentamidine, usually mild and reversible. Kidney function should be monitored during treatment.
Hypotension can occur during or shortly after intravenous or intramuscular administration. Patients should be monitored during and after dosing, and the medicine should be administered with the patient lying down where possible.
Both hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, including new-onset diabetes, have been reported with pentamidine use. Blood glucose should be monitored during and after treatment.
Pentacarinat must be reconstituted using appropriate cytotoxic-handling precautions, including preparation in a fume cupboard or equivalent controlled environment.

Pentacarinat is manufactured and marketed by Sanofi under UK and EU regulatory authorization. It is sourced through authorized European distribution channels for patients seeking named-patient import into India.
Patients typically need a valid prescription from a treating infectious disease specialist or physician confirming diagnosis (PCP, leishmaniasis, or trypanosomiasis) or prophylaxis indication. NPP's regulatory team assists in preparing and verifying the documentation needed for a compliant import.
As a UK/EU-approved therapy for these infections, Pentacarinat is sourced through authorized channels and imported under GDP-compliant logistics to preserve product quality throughout transit.
NPP sources Pentacarinat directly from authorized European pharmaceutical distributors to ensure product authenticity and full traceability. Every shipment is handled under Good Distribution Practice (GDP) conditions from origin to the patient's doorstep.
The dry powder should be stored below 30°C; once reconstituted, the solution must be stored at 2°C to 8°C and used within 24 hours. NPP maintains appropriate handling throughout transit to preserve product integrity.
Once documentation and regulatory approvals are in place, delivery timelines are communicated transparently at the time of quotation, accounting for import clearance and last-mile logistics to the patient's city.
