What Is Encofosbuvir Used For?

Encofosbuvir is an oral antiviral tablet for chronic hepatitis C. It was developed and is made in China by YiChang HEC ChangJiang Pharmaceutical, where it is sold as 东英贺® (Chinese name 艾考磷布韦片). It is never taken alone: it is always paired with a second new Chinese antiviral, netanasvir phosphate capsules, and the two together make a 12-week, all-oral course.

China's National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) approved it in March 2025, for adults with:

  • Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection of genotypes 1, 2, 3 or 6
  • Who have never been treated, or who were treated before with interferon
  • With or without compensated cirrhosis (scarred liver that is still working)

It is a prescription liver medicine and should be used under a hepatologist or gastroenterologist.

How It Works

To multiply, the hepatitis C virus needs an enzyme called NS5B polymerase. Encofosbuvir is a nucleotide "prodrug": once inside liver cells it is converted into its active form, which blocks that enzyme. Netanasvir works on a different viral protein, NS5A. Blocking the virus at two points at the same time is what allows the course to clear it.

What the Trial Showed

Approval was based on a phase 2/3 study in China (NCT05395416), run by the makers, in adults with genotype 1, 2, 3 or 6 infection. According to the company's 2025 and 2026 reimbursement filings, 95% of patients were cured overall, meaning no virus could be found 12 weeks after the last dose (SVR12). By genotype the cure rates were 99% (genotype 1), 99% (genotype 2), 78% (genotype 3) and 92% (genotype 6), and 92.3% in people with compensated cirrhosis. China's drug review centre noted an SVR12 of 94.1% in the double-blind part of the phase 3 study. The full results have not yet been published in an international journal.

Recommended Dosage

  • 600 mg (two 0.3 g tablets) once a day, taken with food
  • Together with netanasvir phosphate 0.1 g (one capsule) once a day
  • Both for 12 weeks
  • The label does not recommend changing the dose or the length of the course

If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as possible on the same day; if the day has passed, simply take the next dose at the usual time and never double up. Older patients and people with mild kidney problems do not need a different dose.

This information is not a treatment plan. For personalized medical advice, consult your doctor and refer to the full prescribing information.

Warnings and Precautions

Never used alone: it only works as part of the two-drug combination with netanasvir, so the warnings for netanasvir also apply.

  • Medicines that must not be combined: it must not be taken with strong P-gp inducers. These include some tuberculosis antibiotics, several older anti-seizure medicines and the herbal remedy St John's wort. One particular heart-rhythm medicine is also restricted during this combination, so give your doctor a full list of everything you take.
  • Hepatitis B: during and after treatment, the label asks doctors to watch for hepatitis flare-ups or hepatitis B reactivation, and to test and treat hepatitis B where needed.
  • Kidney problems: safety and effectiveness have not been established in moderate or severe kidney impairment, or in people on dialysis.
  • Liver function: no specific study has been done in people with liver impairment, and the combination is approved only for compensated (not decompensated) cirrhosis.
  • Children: there are no data in people under 18.

Side effects: in the pooled phase 2 and 3 safety data (442 patients on the combination), side effects were reported in 41.0% of patients, against 31.3% on placebo, and most were mild or moderate. The most common was raised uric acid in the blood. Raised cholesterol and triglycerides were also seen in at least 5% of patients. The company reports no serious side effects linked to the study medicines. Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding is not covered in the published summary, so discuss this with your doctor first.

Documentation & Availability

What documents are required to import Encofosbuvir to India?

The tablets can be imported only in the patient's name, by the patient or a government hospital, in line with India's import regulations for unapproved medicines. You will need:

  • A valid prescription from a qualified hepatologist or gastroenterologist, covering both encofosbuvir and netanasvir
  • Diagnostic reports, including HCV RNA (viral load), the HCV genotype and a liver assessment such as FibroScan or ultrasound
  • Patient ID proof (issued by the Government of India)

How is the order confirmed?

Once we have received and checked a valid prescription and, where needed, an import permit.

Is Encofosbuvir available in India?

No. It is approved only in China. It has no CDSCO approval, it is not sold in Indian pharmacies, and we found no approval by the US FDA or the European Medicines Agency.

Patients can still get it legally through the Named Patient Program (NPP), which allows a medicine not registered in India to be imported for one specific patient on a prescription. Because it is always taken with netanasvir, we import both medicines together for the full course. For another China-approved hepatitis C option, see our page on Alfosbuvir.

It can be made available to patients, doctors, and hospitals across major cities in India, including Gurgaon, Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Hyderabad, Mysore, Kerala, Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, Jaipur, Udaipur, Lucknow, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Chandigarh, Mohali, Faridabad, Noida, Ghaziabad, Kochi, Trivandrum, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Kannur, Mangalore, Bhubaneswar, Patna, Ranchi, Raipur, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Goa, Jammu, Srinagar, Dehradun, Bhopal, Indore, Ludhiana, Amritsar, and others — and can facilitate delivery to the patient's treating hospital. Orders are confirmed only after receipt of a valid doctor's prescription and an import permit, where applicable.

Sourcing & Delivery

NamedPatientProgram.com (NPP) sources this medicine through the manufacturer's authorised supply channels in China and arranges supply to patients, doctors, and hospitals under applicable legal provisions. Each box holds 28 tablets of 0.3 g (4 strips of 7), which is two weeks of treatment at two tablets a day, so a full 12-week course needs 6 boxes, plus 3 boxes of netanasvir. The tablets travel in their sealed original packs and are stored as directed on the pack, under temperature-controlled shipping. All prescriptions are dispensed and checked by registered pharmacists and dispatched from New Delhi, India, after legal requirements are fulfilled.
