Breast Cancer Medicines in India: Imported Treatments by Type

Written by Nitin Goswami Medically reviewed by Dr. Chirag C Shah Last updated
QUICK ANSWERBreast cancer is the most common cancer in Indian women, with an estimated 2,37,231 new cases in 2024 [1]. Many newer medicines for HR-positive, HER2-positive and triple-negative breast cancer are approved in the US or China but are not yet sold in Indian pharmacies. Named Patient Program (NPP) arranges 19 such medicines for individual patients, against a valid prescription from their oncologist.

Types of breast cancer and why the type decides the medicine

After a biopsy, the pathology report tells your doctor whether the cancer has hormone receptors (ER/PR) and whether it makes too much HER2. These two results sort most breast cancers into three main types. A fourth group is defined by an inherited BRCA gene change. Each type responds to different medicines, which is why the same medicine is not used for every patient.

TypeWhat the test showsHow commonMain medicine groups
HR-positive, HER2-negativeER and/or PR positive, HER2 negativeAbout 70% of cases in the US [4]CDK4/6 inhibitors with hormone therapy, PI3K/AKT inhibitors, oral SERDs, antibody-drug conjugates
HER2-positiveExtra HER2 protein or gene copiesAbout 13% in the US [4]; 27% in Indian studies [3]HER2-targeted tablets and HER2 antibody-drug conjugates
Triple-negative (TNBC)ER, PR and HER2 all negativeAbout 11% in the US [4]; 31% in Indian studies [3]TROP2 antibody-drug conjugates, chemotherapy
BRCA-mutatedInherited change in BRCA1 or BRCA2Tested separately (blood or saliva)PARP inhibitors

US figures: NCI SEER, cases 2019–2023. India figures: meta-analysis of published Indian studies; groups overlap, so they do not add up to 100%.
